FiddleneckFlower and Gem Essences

Beth also works with flower and gem essences. Unlike homeopathy, flower and gem essences are not potentized, so they work more slowly. Your animal will need to take them several times a day over an extended period to see deep changes, although he/she may experience immediate emotional relief upon taking them. You can simply add them to your animal’s water bowl once/day. When Beth makes an essence mix, she combines several essences tailored to your animal’s individual needs. Flower and gem essences work very well in combination with homeopathy.

Beth has an on-going practice of making her own flower and gem essences. Many of these essences are made from California native plants that she encounters on her hikes.  To make an essence, place a flower, plant or gem in a bowl of distilled water and then set the bowl in the sun for about three hours. The sun’s rays transfer the energetic properties of the plant to the water.  Essences are relatively easy to make, and Beth occasionally gives her clients the “homework” of making essences for their animals when plants that will help them that are locally available.

What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a therapy that addresses the whole animal, utilizing the healing capacity of the animal’s own energy or “vital force.” The vital force is what makes each animal more than just his/her physical components and biochemical reactions. When the vital force is adversely affected by disease, it creates symptoms – signs that the body is trying to defend itself against a disturbance. Symptoms disappear when the disease is eliminated. True health in homeopathic terms is present when an animal experiences complete freedom of body and spirit.

What is a Typical Course of Treatment?

It is best to give an animal a “constitutional” remedy when he/she is young, in order to strengthen his/her health and prevent disease. However, if animals have acquired diseases, they can also benefit from homeopathy. Generally, the healthier the animal, the less frequently the remedy needs to be given. A young dog or cat may need a remedy only one time! An older animal fighting cancer may need to receive the remedy several times a day for many days.

A relatively healthy animal will come for an initial consultation, and then return for follow-up four to six weeks later. If the condition has been addressed, he/she may not need further treatment. An animal battling a more critical condition may need to be seen every week or two with frequent phone consultations to monitor the condition.

What Symptoms Can Homeopathy Address?

Homeopathy can address almost all behavioral issues and physical illness. As a general rule, the stronger an animal’s vital force, the more quickly he/she will advance toward health. Young animals heal especially rapidly with homeopathy.

Almost any condition can be addressed by homeopathy including:

  • fear or aggression
  • lack of energy
  • musculoskeletal issues
  • respiratory issues
  • skin problems
  • end-of-life issues
Homeopathy is not likely to cure late-stage terminal diseases, but it may make the animal feel better while living with the disease.

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies are extremely dilute, natural substances that stimulate the vital force to function to its full capacity. Remedies work through the “Law of Similiars,” which can be stated, “like cures like.” In other words, when a substance reproduces symptoms of illness in an animal, it stimulates that animal’s own vital force to eliminate the illness. There are over 3,000 homeopathic remedies, but very few that match the disease state of an individual animal. Through their special preparation, homeopathic remedies are rendered non-toxic while their potency is actually increased through a combination of dilution and succussion (shaking.) Thus, inert crude substances can become powerful medicines, and toxic substances can become safe and curative. Therefore, homeopathy has the advantage of avoiding the side-effects of conventional drugs, and can be used in conjunction with them; though optimal results are achieved when animals are not receiving other medications.

Does it Always Work?

Usually, if you are not seeing results with homeopathy, it is because

  1. the animal is too weak to mount a healing response
  2. the symptoms were not sufficiently understood by the homeopath and thus the correct remedy has not been used.

If your animal is relatively healthy, and you have not seen results with the first or second remedy, don’t give up hope! If you continue to carefully report your animal’s symptoms to your homeopath, he or she will eventually have the information he/she needs in order to find the remedy. When homeopathy doesn’t work, it is usually because the right remedy has not yet been tried. Many people are used to the methods of western medicine, in which there are only one or two medications for any given condition. The homeopath is choosing from approximately 3,000 remedies which could potentially help an animal. So unless your animal is very weak or his/her health has been suppressed by years of western medications, homeopathy will work when THE RIGHT REMEDY IS FOUND. Finding this remedy requires a good deal of communication with your homeopath. He /she is usually looking for information that a traditional veterinarian would not ask for. Over time, clients learn the kind of information a homeopath is looking for and become better at reporting symptoms.  If you stick with the process, eventually the remedy should become apparent to your homeopath.
